What bothers you and why?
Tagline: Because even the little irritations tell a bigger story.

At UncommonPen, we believe that writing isnβt just about crafting perfect sentences – itβs about being honest. Itβs about exploring the stuff we feel but donβt always say out loud. So today, Iβm answering a simple question from the WordPress daily prompt: What bothers you and why?

The Thing That Gets to Me Most
We all have pet peeves. The driver who doesnβt use a turn signal. The person whoβs always late. The never-ending stream of notifications. But one thing that really bothers me – in a deeper, more personal way – is when people donβt truly listen.
I donβt mean casual silence. I mean the kind of moment where youβre trying to share something real, and the other person is mentally elsewhere. Theyβre nodding, but not hearing. Theyβre responding, but not engaging. Itβs like talking into a void dressed up as a conversation.
Why It Hits Hard
Hereβs the thing: listening is one of the simplest ways we show others they matter. It doesnβt require special skills – just attention, presence, and respect. When someone tunes out, interrupts, or shifts the focus back to themselves, it stings. It makes you feel like your words, and by extension you, donβt matter.
And I get it – weβre all busy. Weβve got messages to reply to, deadlines to hit, lives to juggle. But in that rush, we lose something vital: connection.
What It Teaches Me
Ironically, what bothers me most is also what shapes me. Iβve become more intentional about being present in conversations. I put my phone down more. I pause before responding. I ask follow-up questions. Because I know how it feels to not be heard – and I donβt want to make anyone else feel that way.
In the end, what bothers us often reveals what we value. For me, itβs empathy, attention, and genuine human connection.
