What bothers you and why?
Tagline: Because even the little irritations tell a bigger story.

At UncommonPen, we believe that writing isnโt just about crafting perfect sentences – itโs about being honest. Itโs about exploring the stuff we feel but donโt always say out loud. So today, Iโm answering a simple question from the WordPress daily prompt: What bothers you and why?

The Thing That Gets to Me Most
We all have pet peeves. The driver who doesnโt use a turn signal. The person whoโs always late. The never-ending stream of notifications. But one thing that really bothers me – in a deeper, more personal way – is when people donโt truly listen.
I donโt mean casual silence. I mean the kind of moment where youโre trying to share something real, and the other person is mentally elsewhere. Theyโre nodding, but not hearing. Theyโre responding, but not engaging. Itโs like talking into a void dressed up as a conversation.
Why It Hits Hard
Hereโs the thing: listening is one of the simplest ways we show others they matter. It doesnโt require special skills – just attention, presence, and respect. When someone tunes out, interrupts, or shifts the focus back to themselves, it stings. It makes you feel like your words, and by extension you, donโt matter.
And I get it – weโre all busy. Weโve got messages to reply to, deadlines to hit, lives to juggle. But in that rush, we lose something vital: connection.
What It Teaches Me
Ironically, what bothers me most is also what shapes me. Iโve become more intentional about being present in conversations. I put my phone down more. I pause before responding. I ask follow-up questions. Because I know how it feels to not be heard – and I donโt want to make anyone else feel that way.
In the end, what bothers us often reveals what we value. For me, itโs empathy, attention, and genuine human connection.
