The Word Weโ€™re All Overusing

What is a word you feel that too many people use?

“Literally” โ€” a word thatโ€™s everywhere, even when it doesnโ€™t belong.

Some words start out fresh and meaningfulโ€”then get thrown around so often they lose all their magic. For me, that word is “literally.”

Once upon a time, โ€œliterallyโ€ meant actually true in a factual, physical sense. Now, itโ€™s used to emphasize just about anything, whether itโ€™s real or wildly exaggerated.

โ€œI was literally dying of laughter.โ€
โ€œThat was literally the best coffee ever.โ€

No, you werenโ€™t dying. And while the coffee may have been great, unless it cured all your lifeโ€™s problems in one sip, it probably wasnโ€™t literally the best in the world.

Itโ€™s not that the word itself is badโ€”itโ€™s just become a linguistic crutch. A filler to make our stories feel bigger, bolder, and more dramatic. But sometimes, less is more. Swapping โ€œliterallyโ€ for a more precise word makes sentences sharper and gives them back their authenticity.

So maybe the next time you feel tempted to use โ€œliterally,โ€ pause for a second. Is it truly literal? Or is there a more creative, honest way to say it? Your sentencesโ€”and your readersโ€”will thank you.
