What’s the Most Money You’ve Ever Spent on a Meal? Was It Worth It?

What’s the most money you’ve ever spent on a meal? Was it worth it?

When a beetroot tart costs more than your monthly grocery billβ€”was it indulgence or insight?
What’s the most you’ve ever spent on a vegetarian mealβ€”and was it worth it?

We all have that one food memory. Maybe it’s your grandmother’s dal that could mend a broken soul, or the roadside pav bhaji that tasted like rebellion and butter. But today, I want to talk about the other kind of memoryβ€”the kind that comes with a three-digit bill and just enough food to leave you politely hungry.

It happened in Delhi. A place with dim lighting, mood music, and a 12-course vegetarian tasting menu. Each plate looked like it belonged in an art galleryβ€”an edible painting of microgreens, foam, and things I couldn’t pronounce. I had a smoked beetroot tart that arrived under a glass dome filled with rosemary mist. My paneer? Aged, brΓ»lΓ©ed, and paired with an elderflower gel.

The cost? Let’s just say it felt like I bought shares in a beetroot farm.

So, was it worth it?

In terms of sheer nourishment? Not really. I could’ve had five thalis and still had change for dessert.
But in terms of experienceβ€”yes. It was a reminder that food can be more than food. It can be theater, design, and even gentle absurdity. That dinner wasn’t just about eating; it was about slowing down, paying attention, and letting flavor surprise me. It was a celebration of how far vegetarian cuisine has comeβ€”from second thought to showstopper.

It also reminded me that splurging now and then isn’t a betrayal of practicalityβ€”it’s an invitation to create a story.

So I ask you:
What’s the most money you’ve ever spent on a meal? Was it a luxurious indulgence or a lesson in restraint? A culinary revelation or an expensive plate of regret? Drop your story in the commentsβ€”I’d love to read it.

Beautifully written! I spent most of my money on rice and fish dishes because as a Bengali this is my favourite food πŸ˜‹

Ah, rice and fishβ€”that’s the heart and soul of Bengali comfort food! Honestly, few things beat the joy of a perfectly cooked maach-bhaat. Worth every rupee and every memory it brings with it! πŸ˜‹πŸŸ
